أعلنت جبهة البوليساريو التي تتخذ من مخيمات تيندوف في جنوب غربي الجزائر مقراً لها، وفاة زعيمها محمد ولد عبد العزيز اليوم الثلاثاء بعد صراع طويل مع المرض. 
  
وقالت الجبهة في برقية صادرة عن الأمانة الوطنية لجبهة البوليساريو إن " ولد عبد العزيز انتقل إلى رحمة الله اليوم الثلاثاء". 
  
وقالت الأمانة: "انتقل إلى مثواه الأخير بعد صراع طويل مع المرض"، معلنة الحداد لمدة أربعين يوماً. 
  
وأشارت الأمانة الوطنية للجبهة  إلى إنه "حسب المادة 49 من القانون الأساسي للجبهة؛ يتولى رئيس المجلس الوطني منصب الأمين العام للجبهة ورئيس الجمهورية، إلى غاية انتخاب الأمين العام الجديد في مؤتمر استثنائي يعقد في ظرف 40 يوما من وفاة الرئيس"، بحسب نص البيان. 
  
وكان ولد عبد العزيز قد قاد جبهة البوليساريو منذ عام 1976 وحتى وفاته، وهو ثاني رئيس للجبهة بعد تأسيسها عام 1973.
